From Tariffs to Treasures:

Finding Beauty Close to Home

If you’ve been following the world of interior design (or just trying to buy a sofa without having a minor heart attack), you’ve probably noticed that things… cost more these days. A lot more.

So – let’s talk about the elephant in the room - Tariffs.

Tariffs are basically taxes on imported goods — and to be honest, it’s nothing we haven’t already had to deal with in some way shape or form throughout the years. Certain pieces I’ve had my eye on over the years were already subject to “extra importing costs” – they just never used that fancy T-word for them, so we may not have realized it at the time. Regardless, the conversation around these extra importing costs have been shaking up the design world, from furniture and fabrics to light fixtures and accessories. While that might sound like nothing but bad news, here’s a little silver lining: tariffs are actually nudging us toward something beautiful — buying local.

What’s going on?

In recent years, tariffs on goods coming from countries like China and Europe have driven up prices on many of the things we designers love to use: upholstery, case goods, lighting, custom hardware, and more. That dreamy velvet chair you had your eye on? Chances are, the price tag today is noticeably higher than it was a couple of years ago.

For designers and clients alike, this means we have to get a little more creative.

The local love story

Here’s where it gets exciting: tariffs are pushing many of us to look closer to home for beautifully crafted pieces. And you know what? I’m here for it.

By sourcing locally made furnishings, textiles, and accessories, we’re not only supporting talented artisans and makers right in our backyard — we’re also cutting down on shipping delays, reducing our environmental footprint, and often getting better quality.

It’s like the universe is giving us a little nudge to shop with heart.

What this means for your next project

When you work with me, we’ll talk honestly about your budget and your wishlist — including where we can prioritize local finds that bring serious style and value to your space. You might even discover a one-of-a-kind piece that no one else has (and that didn’t take a slow boat from overseas to get here).

Yes, we may need to rethink some expectations around pricing. But here’s the real magic: you’ll end up with a home that feels personal, meaningful, and beautifully you.

Ready to love local?

If you’re dreaming of a space that tells your story — with pieces that support local makers and fit your lifestyle — let’s chat. And hey, if you know a friend who’s stressing over rising prices, share this with them! We can all use a little reminder that sometimes change brings us closer to home… in the best possible way.
